Design Documentation
As a product design intern for WillowTree, I worked on the design documentation for a fortune 500 company: This entailed detailed documentation of anatomy and usage of recurring features, guidelines, and additional resources for this organization's developers and designers.
THE WHY
Why is Design Documentation Important?
Up until this internship, I struggled to manage larger design projects. When working on a team, managing design systems across platforms such as web, tablet, and mobile can lead to discrepancies. Documentation provides specificity on use cases and decreases time spent on modifications toward design consistency.
MY CONTRIBUTION
Documenting an Adaptive Design Ecosystem
My contribution to this design system consisted of outlining the specification of the anatomy and usage of Tags and Tabs. This entailed documentation of spacing, padding, iconography, type sizes, and corresponding with design tokens to streamline design across various product channels.
MY CONTRIBUTION
Design Tokenization Assistance
I also assisted the lead Product Designer in building out tokens for global border radius, global spacing, role based border radius, and global sizing.
REFLECTIONS
A Brief Conclusion
Design documentation requires attention to detail among a lot of moving parts. In the case of this client, I was tasked with cross referencing existing product sites, the current design token system, and with designers evolving the system itself. However, I enjoyed documentation because it allowed me to get better acquainted with the design system and the scale of it overall.
